Pilot Program Support

Pilot Program Support for Thorough EMV

A Challenge:

You want to try something new. You pilot it to test its workability, gauge customer response, and compare offerings of competing vendors.

Your emphasis may be on the concept and implementation, but will you collect the data cost-effectively to measure the benefits and costs necessary to decide if the pilot should become a program, and what updates are required for a successful launch?

Our Solution:

We can help you during the design, implementation and evaluation phases of your pilots.

We advise you on the design of your pilot, including developing appropriate comparisons, determining optimal size, scope and duration, and scaling the results.

Once underway, we monitor your pilot, collecting and analyzing the data it yields to keep you apprised of progress.

Finally, we support you in drawing final conclusions and reporting results to relevant regulators and stakeholders.

Grid Modernization

Grid Modernization for Efficiency, Resiliency, Renewables, Empowering Customers

A Challenge:

You need to upgrade your distribution infrastructure to make it more resilient to extreme weather, accommodate the growth of renewables and other distributed resources, serve more businesses and homes, and empower your customers.

Yet the enabling technologies are rapidly evolving, complex, and expensive. And coordination with government agencies, regulators, and third-party technical experts can be challenging.

Our Solution:

We help you ensure your distribution grid pilots and programs produce robust results that withstand scrutiny by regulators and stakeholders.

We help you assess competing solutions offered by different vendors under field conditions and advise on pilot design to yield evaluable results. We monitor and evaluate multiple benefit streams and communicate robust results to regulators and stakeholders in language they understand.

Impact Evaluation

Impact Evaluation

A Challenge:

Your programs and pilots can’t just sound good – they need to deliver results that pass muster with regulators and stakeholders.

How much savings did an energy efficiency program achieve? Did your distribution grid upgrade deliver the expected benefits? Did your demand response program deliver when it was called on?

Our Solution:

We measure the impacts of grid modernization projects, and energy efficiency and demand response programs targeting all types of customers, including small, mid-sized and large commercial and public building owner/operators, multi-unit apartments, and single-family dwellings for electric and natural gas utilities.

We advise program managers and implementers on steps to improve their program delivery and impact measurement.

    Net-to-Gross Evaluation

Net to Gross Evaluation with Actionable Recommendations

    A Challenge:

Are you required by regulators or stakeholders to research Net-to-Gross, or the share of gross savings directly attributable to your program?

Are you surprised by the results, wondering where the numbers came from or why your savings took a haircut?

Would you like to address free ridership and spillover in the program design, so you can claim more of your gross savings?

    Our Solution:

We interview and survey participants and partners of residential, commercial, and industrial programs to quantify free ridership and spillover following your state’s TRM, or, when none are prescribed, the most appropriate of recognized methods.

We deliver the data, but also offer explanations for the free ridership and spillover findings, and steps to reduce free ridership and increase spillover.

We love helping you design your programs to both reduce free ridership and increase spillover from the start, and offer training in NTG for your program managers and implementers.

    Savings Attribution

    Savings Attribution Analysis

    A Challenge:

How much of your program’s measured energy savings is a result of the program itself? How much of the savings would have happened even without the program?

Could your program spend less to achieve the same savings? Could a tweak to the design or delivery have a significant impact?

    Our Solution:

Savings attribution helps you understand how much of your savings is attributable to the program itself, and how much was market-driven and likely to have occurred anyway.

This understanding is essential for publicly owned utilities (POUs) and tribal utility authorities (TUAs) to let you target program spending to deliver top value to stakeholders. Similar in concept to the net-to-gross research many investor-owned utilities (IOUs) perform, savings attribution research can guide program development to help you deliver more for less.

With a complete understanding of the program model and design, and depending on need, we combine primary and secondary research and benchmarking to inform and assist in program design to deliver more savings for your programs and encourage your customers to take independent steps toward greater efficiency.

    Process Evaluation

Process Evaluation Brings Your Programs into Focus

    A Challenge:

How can you squeeze more savings from the same budget? How can you keep your legacy programs relevant?

Are the DR resources reliable? Will trade allies deliver savings?

How can you take advantage of the changing marketplace?

    Our Solution:

We start each evaluation by developing a full understanding of the program design, challenges, and goals.

Interviews and surveys are the backbone of our evaluation. We offer other data collection methods too, such as ride-alongs and on-site visits. We may also conduct secondary research and benchmarking studies.

Asking the right questions is key, but only the start: thorough, holistic analysis is critical to delivering actionable results. We answer your “so what?” questions in accessible language geared to your team.

    Program Design

    Program Design Support

    A Challenge:

Margins are tight, and staffing may be in transition, but you need more from your programs than ever before.

Could making changes to your program design and processes help push it to the next level?

    Our Solution:

Relying on our background in product design and program evaluation, we help you get more for your program dollar.

We help program managers and implementers understand and improve their program’s effectiveness at translating dollars spent into net savings, encouraging participants to make additional efficiency improvements on their own, and improving net savings predictions.

    Awareness & Education

    Awareness & Education

    A Challenge:

Are your customers or constituents unaware of the benefits they could reap through energy efficiency, demand response?

Is there a perception that projects are too expensive or complicated?

Are potential program partners unaware of the benefits they could enjoy by delivering your programs?

    Our Solution:

We conduct research to understand the existing situation.

We develop and deliver targeted educational material to build awareness across the target population, including school children, community leaders, industry leaders, social organizations, and potential trade allies.

The material can range from training courses to pod casts, community conversations to educational displays with links in retail settings, and more to meet your goals.

    Research

Primary and Secondary Research with Understandable, Actionable Results

    A Challenge:

Wouldn’t it be nice to have known then what you know now?

Do you need to collect and synthesize data, support your proposals and develop projections, but lack the resources?

    Our Solution:

We conduct research to address your needs and  inform your decision-making with actionable results. Our research methods include primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative research, literature reviews, interviews and surveys, and on-site visits

We don’t bury you in reams of paper and piles of charts, leaving you thinking “that’s nice, but so what?”

We tell you what matters, why, and what you can realistically do about it.
